Personalising your Motorhome: Motorhome Decorating Ideas

When you buy a motorhome you’re (obviously) buying a vehicle which will become your on-the-road home-from-home – but the initial simplicity and neutrality of the interior might seem bare or even stark. It doesn’t have to stay that way, though. Transforming your motorhome into your very own personalised haven requires a handful of thoughtful additions and a few practical considerations, involving a mix of creativity and functionality. How do you go about decorating motorhomes and filling them with personal touches, ‘jazzing things up’ to give your vehicle a ‘you’ ambience reflective of your personality?

In this edition of our blog we’ll run through some motorhome decorating ideas…

The aesthetics of personalising your motorhome

Vibrancy

Motorhomes often sport a neutral palette. This is usually inoffensive, with neutral colours and fixtures and fittings which don’t scream for your attention – the overall effect being of a very calm environment. You wouldn’t exactly say that any factory fresh motorhome lacks personality, more that the interior is modestly turned out and provides the perfect canvas for personalisation. For example, when you introduce bursts of colour by using vibrant cushions or lively throws, you will elevate your living space. Using mismatched patterns on these fabric items adds eclectic character, making for an inviting and unique living space.

Ambience

Creating a welcoming and relaxing ambience is relatively easy. Your motorhome may have dimmable lighting, and you can also use the on/off of lighting in different areas to create certain effects during the evening. Just like at home, with certain combinations of lamps being more comfortable than others, you will soon find your preferred level of lighting. It’s also possible to add in even more cosiness to your motorhome by using string lighting (aka. fairy lights) both inside and outside. A great tip is to use yellow bulbs as these offer a warm and mellow glow during relaxed evenings. You could even use candles, too, though you should always be careful as naked flames are a fire hazard (and dripping candles leave wax splodges which can damage surfaces). All of these are readily available at hardware stores and in supermarkets.

Invitation

One of the most important things about any domestic home is how it will feel to visitors. This is why, when we have ‘got people coming’ we all tend to tidy up and clean, so that our home presents the best version of ourselves to those from the outside world who are invited in. It is also, actually, good practice for you too. Living in a clean and tidy environment has great mental health benefits. The same applies to your motorhome. Regardless of the efficiency of the space, cleanliness is paramount so that you don’t feel overwhelmed. When you’re out on the road, regular airing of these things helps maintain freshness. You should also dedicate a bit of time during the winter period for a thorough clean (including the curtains, soft furnishings, surfaces and floors). All of these ‘domestic’ routines will help your motorhome truly feel like home.

Memory

Using yourself as source material is one of the best motorhome decorating ideas. Back at home you probably have family pictures up the wall of your staircase, or photos adorning your mantelpiece and cherished memories magnetised to the door of your fridge-freezer. These happy memories or landmark moments keep you emotionally buoyant on a daily basis, reminding you of who you are and where you fit into the world. There’s no rule against making your motorhome as loaded with memories. Adorn the walls with a few photos from home, as well as postcards, pictures and even souvenirs you collect during your travels. Everything tells a story, and including these things as part of your motorhome decor creates a truly distinctive interior which reflects the spirit of your adventures.

Personal Artistry

Embrace your artistic side during off-road days. Photograph or paint landscapes of magnificent scenery at your travel destinations and put these up on the walls. Engage in crafting to produce useful and comfortable items – a handcrafted patchwork quilt or a crocheted blanket will add unique and cosy personal touches to your motorhome interior.

Kids

Venturing off in a motorhome is a fantastic way for families to enjoy their leisure time. You are, essentially, taking the whole household on the road – and so there should definitely be touches from home to make sure you have ownership over the space you’re (temporarily) living in. For the kids this will mean things to keep them engaged – games, toys, books and perhaps even art supplies. These can all be neatly stored for easy access, in plastic boxes or tubs in the motorhome’s garage if necessary.

Floors

Introduce rugs as these will provide insulation as well as decoration. A really nice rug will offer a touch of colour and pattern, and allows personal expression. You could even buy a rug on your travels, to add a ‘talking point’ unique touch to your motorhome.

Scents

It’s possible to be quite subtle and not use visual cues when in maintaining a very pleasant environment in your motorhome. It’s simple – keep it smelling fresh by using scented sprays or fresh flowers. Regularly ventilating the space will also help get rid of the ‘smells of life’.

Bedding

The original interior aesthetics of your motorhome might ‘demand’ fairly neutral bedding but – in common with cushions, throws and rugs – adding in something colourful or strongly patterned will immediately transform the space into something much more homely. With interesting sheets, duvet covers and pillows, sweet dreams await in your revamped motorhome haven.         Here at Lowdhams we have load of blank canvasses – in other words, motorhomes – just waiting for you to give the personal touch.
