Our Guide to Winter Sun Destinations in Your Motorhome

The seasons, as they say, just keep on turning… This natural fact means that each year motorhomers are left with a choice. Either winterise your vehicle and park it up, put it into storage or get in it and adventure off to sunnier climes.

As long and cold winter days set in across the UK, many of us hunker down for the winter and start to think about ‘where we’ll go next summer’. However, for motorhomers it can actually be different. This is where the true flexibility of owning a leisure vehicle comes into play. Not only do motorhomes allow you to travel when you like, they also provide the chance to explore where you like. So, right in the heart of winter you can head off to visit some of Europe’s sunniest destinations. The added bonus is that it’ll probably mean you’ll do so without the crowds, high seasonal prices or baggage restrictions that often come with more traditional forms of travel.

Here in this brand new edition of the Lowdhams blog, we’ll provide our guide to winter sun destinations in your motorhome, explore some of the best winter sun destinations in Europe for motorhome enthusiasts, and highlight the benefits of winter motorhome travel, and provide practical tips to ensure your trip is a success. From Spain’s Costa del Sol to the lesser-known coastal retreats in Portugal and beyond, let’s get started on planning your winter escape.

The Benefits of Winter Motorhome Travel

Getting away in winter has a series of benefits for the motorhome traveller.

  • Escape: The most immediately obvious benefit of motorhome travel during the winter is that you’ll escape the harsh weather – traditionally unpredictable but almost guaranteed to be cold (this is the UK, after all). Days grow shorter and temperatures drop, and motorhoming suddenly presents a real chance to find sunshine and pleasant surroundings. A motorhome lets you head straight to somewhere ‘better’.
  • Lower costs: Many destinations are less expensive during off-peak, with campsites and ferries often more affordable in the quieter months. This offers another great advantage to winter motorhoming. Fuel costs may also be lower and, since motorhomes eliminate the need for pricey hotels, the overall trip can be very cost-effective.
  • Less people: Not that you’re anti-social, of course, but winter motorhome travel gives you the chance to experience Europe’s most popular destinations without the usual crowds of tourists. Whether you’re visiting famous cities, exploring remote villages or simply enjoying pretty coastal routes, winter travel means you’ll have more space and more peace.
Practical Tips for Winter Travel

Following these essential tips will make your trip smooth and enjoyable.

1. Road conditions and rules

Driving in foreign countries requires some knowledge of local traffic laws. Make sure you’re aware of speed limits, tolls and parking regulations. Some countries also have low-emission zones, so check if your motorhome is permitted through these areas. Additionally, while we’re here and discussing rules and regulations, you should always make sure that you comply with other documentation if the countries you’re visiting require it, such as the International Driving Permit (IDP).

2. Travel tech

There are plenty of useful apps you can use on your journey. Park4Night can help you find motorhome-friendly campsites and parking, while essentials for navigating new routes include Waze and Google Maps. Use AccuWeather to keep track of conditions so that you’re prepared for any sudden changes.

Where to go for Winter Sun in your Motorhome

When you’re looking for European sun during the winter months you’re pretty much spoiled for choice. We’ve selected a mix of some popular and some lesser-known spots where you can park up your motorhome and enjoy sunny days, mild temperatures and spectacular scenery. Off you go!

1. Spain: Costa del Sol

Probably one of the most famous sun destinations in Europe, Spain’s Costa del Sol is just about as good in winter as it is in summer, famed for its warm weather, relaxed atmosphere and beautiful beaches. It stretches along the southern coast, with the Mediterranean to the south and the Sierra Blanca mountains to the north – and offers an incredible 300+ days per year of sunshine! Motorhome travellers will find plenty of campsites open all year round, such as Camping La Bella Vista in the town of Estepona, which offers stunning views of the Med and is within easy reach of Marbella and Malaga. Another excellent option is Camping Cabopino, located near the popular resort town of Marbella.

  • Scenic Route: Drive along the N340 coast road, a scenic route that hugs the shoreline, offering beautiful views of the sea and charming coastal towns like Nerja, Malaga and Marbella. You’ll drive past lush valleys, dramatic cliffs and hidden beaches, so you’ll encounter plenty of opportunities for relaxation and exploration.

2. Portugal: The Algarve

Just west of Spain, Portugal’s Algarve region is another really fantastic potential winter escape when you want some sun. The Algarve enjoys mild winters with temperatures that average between 10°C and 18°C. An ideal spot for a motorhome trip. The coastline along the Algarve showcases a sprawling thread of beautiful beaches, charming fishing villages and dramatic cliffs. Motorhome travellers will find plenty of campsites open all year round, such as Camping Albufeira, a great option which offers year-round facilities just a short drive from Albufeira’s famous beaches. Camping Olhao is another good option, located in a peaceful area near the Ria Formosa Natural Park, great for birdwatching and exploring the dunes and salt flats. The perfect spot for nature lovers.

  • Scenic Route: A drive along the EN125 road will take you through quaint towns like Lagos and Tavira, with plenty of coastal vistas along the way.

3. France: Cote d’Azur

If you fancy a sophisticated location in which to soak up your winter sun, the Cote d’Azur (aka. the French Riviera) will provide you with a stunning mix of epic coastline, glamorous resorts and all the charm of the. It can be quite an expensive region in the summer due to being a global draw, famous for luxurious destinations such as Nice, Cannes and Monaco. Motorhome travellers can enjoy its more laid-back side in winter, with fewer crowds. Motorhome travellers will find plenty of campsites open all year round, such as Camping Le Pylone near Nice – open year-round and an excellent base for exploring the French Riviera. Another option is Camping Les Cigales, a well-maintained campsite in the hills above Fréjus, with easy access to both the beach and the mountains.

  • Scenic Route: Take the ‘Route Napoleon’ (N85), a historic road that winds through the Alps with stunning views of the mountains and the coastline. Driving between Antibes and Monaco is also spectacular, sea on one side and mountains on the other.

4. Italy: Sicily

If you’re looking for something a little off the beaten path, here’s an offer you can’t refuse: Sicily. This is the largest island in the Mediterranean (nearby Italy is not an island, remember) and it boasts pleasant winter weather, picturesque landscapes including Mount Etna (Europe’s most active volcano) and a very rich cultural heritage. The island’s coastal roads offer stunning views of crystal-clear waters, ancient ruins and charming towns. Motorhome travellers will find plenty of campsites open all year round, such as Camping Valle dei Templi near Agrigento. This one offers good facilities for motorhomes all year round, and it’s ideally located for visiting the famous Valley of the Temples. Camping La Pineta is another great option, offering easy access to the nearby city of Palermo and the surrounding countryside.

  • Scenic Route: The SS115 coastal road is a must-drive, taking you along the southern coast with views of the sea and some truly charming fishing villages. Don’t miss the opportunity to visit the ancient city of Catania, at the base of Mount Etna.
