In common with all of the other Airstream models, it’s a true statement piece about who you are and what you do.

The Basecamp is lightweight and versatile – and more than just a ‘can do’ leisure vehicle for outdoor types…

The 16 is the two-berth version of the Basecamp and is a compact 16 feet long and 7 feet wide, so is easy to tow and manoeuvre to your chosen destination. The Basecamp 20 offers an extra four feet in length and approximately nine inches in width and can sleep up to four. The exterior of both the 16 and 20 Basecamp models features an almost sci-fi take on the classic Airstream look, with that aluminium sheen and tinted wraparound windows vibe brought into even sharper focus due to the size and shape of the caravan.

Airstream Basecamp is fitted with everything you need for a getaway but there’s nothing merely functional about it. In keeping with the attention to detail of the larger models, there are several luxuries – including a wet room, air con, heating controls and those signature panoramic windows, plus attachable tent option and solar pre-wiring. One of the stand-out features is the rear hatch, perfect for loading bike, board or other large leisure gear with ease.

The interior is organised and uncomplicated, offering a clear way of living which isn’t compromised by the compact nature of the model. Everything you would want is present and correct in the Basecamp, cleverly thought through and sited. The rear entry hatch / door leads into a convertible lounge area.

In the 16, two rear benches measure 24” x 76” and can function as single beds, a combined half bed or a complete double bed. The tables become bed supports, and the back cushions of the seats fill in the centre gap when converted into the bed. In the Basecamp 20, you still the size of the bench seating is expanded to 26” x 78”, and there is additional storage underneath compared to the 16. There is also a small storage compartment built into the floor which is perfect for stowing accessories.

In the Basecamp 16 the kitchen area follows the front curve, with a view out of the panoramic windows. A two-burner gas stove with a tempered glass cover can be used as extra worktop space, and there’s a large, round sink. Under the counter is plenty of storage for pots, pans and food, plus the fridge. In the 20 the kitchen area is located in a span across the aisle, and includes the two-burner gas stove, sink, storage and fridge.

When it comes to the wet room area, in the 20, the overall height is a few inches more, which means a taller space in which to wash etc. The 16 features a pass-through so you can bring the interior’s shower head to the exterior and rinse off dirty adventure gear or take an outdoor shower.

The idea behind the Basecamp is to make quick getaways incredibly easy for outdoor types who want to take off to the country or the coast and use their Airstream caravan as somewhere to return to after a day’s adventuring, or as a comfortable base when the weather’s not so great. It’s a delightful model from Airstream, and despite the compact size it has a great ‘feel’.
