The Best Motorhomes Under 3,500kg

What makes motorhomes below 3,500kg so attractive – and why is that weight mark so important? In this edition of our blog we’ll answer both of those questions, and more! We’ll also give you a handful of examples of terrific motorhomes which fit the 3,500kg premise.

Your standard driving licence covers you

One of the main benefits to driving a motorhome which is below the 3,500kg maximum loading weight is that your standard UK driving licence legally entitles you to do so. For those who may not already know what maximum loading weight means, it is the maximum weight of a motorhome including a full fuel tank and everything else which has been placed within the vehicle (luggage, equipment, accessories, passengers etc). Drivers of motorhomes under 3,500kg do not need to achieve any additional classification on their driving licence, but if the motorhome is above this maximum loading weight then they do need a higher classification (which would entail a further practical test in addition to a three-part theory test, more paperwork and legal requirements such as a medical).

Other reasons for driving a motorhome 3,500kg or below

Size: Smaller motorhome models often make the perfect choice, especially for people who are new to the lifestyle. These vehicles are easier to handle and manoeuvre than larger ones – ideal if you’re navigating busier areas or narrow country roads – and therefore those which do not exceed 3,500kg are much more readily accessible to anyone.
Price: Buying obviously means parting with some of your hard-earned cash, so if you’re working to a budget at the tighter end of motorhome budgets, you’re more likely to find a compact model is what’s affordable – but you’ll still get some serious bang for your buck. Opting for a pre-owned motorhome is a great way to ensure even more value.
Efficiency: The general rule of thumb is that smaller means more fuel efficiency – in other words, the lower weight means less fuel consumption. The size also means that motorhomes 3,500kg or below are easier and more efficient to heat during winter or other cold spells.
Flexibility: There are practical concerns when you buy a new motorhome, including where you will store or park it – in a garage or on the drive? Many smaller motorhomes are actually flexible enough for use as your daily runner – particularly panel van conversions, which are just about as easy to handle as standard family cars.

The best motorhomes under 3,500kg

1.  Chausson X range:
With two models to choose from, the X range from French manufacturer Chausson offers the on the road agility of a campervan with the low profile comfort of a motorhome. The exterior is cool and stylish but it’s the interior where the Chausson X 550 and X 650 really sing. Comfort is also guaranteed, with the lounge area offering a great social spot next to a neatly equipped kitchen area. There’s also plenty of storage despite the compact nature, including a rear hold, and the Chausson X range is perfect for couples or small families who want to head out on adventures in something modest but stylish and capable.

2.  Hymer ML-T range:
From motorhoming giants Hymer, the ML-T 580 is a two to three-berth model which features twin singles at the rear (in an area which offers bedroom privacy behind a central washroom). The kitchen is well equipped and the generous living space up front includes an L-shaped lounge plus driver cab seats turn to face the interior, increasing the social possibilities and making every trip a happy trip.

3.  Swift Voyager 4 Series:
One of the most popular UK motorhome manufacturers and one of the most popular motorhome ranges. The Swift Voyager is a modern classic, and the three model Voyager 4 series perfectly encapsulates all that is good or great about 3,500kg motorhomes. Built on a Ford chassis, the Voyager 4 Series maximises interior space without making any compromises on either design or essential detail. An over-cab fixed bed is complemented by a choice of rear bed options (and a large single at the front), and the Voyager 4 series is well set up for families to enjoy time on the road. All three models weigh in at 3,500kg so can be driven on a standard UK Category B driving licence.
If you’re new to motorhoming, a 3,500kg model will be just the ticket for your first taste of the lifestyle. Manoeuvrable and manageable, you won’t be overawed.
